Reduction of Harmonics in a Hybrid Wind/PVMicro Grid Using a Modified MultilevelI nverter
Abstract
This paper presents the design and modeling of a hybrid PV/wind micro grid using an asymmetrical multilevel inverter. The objective of this model is to extract maximum energy from renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, and test the performance of the system in terms of harmonics. Renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind, are widely used for electricity generation due to their availability and environmental benefits. Hybrid applications, which utilize more than one renewable energy source, have gained popularity, particularly in remote areas where a stable power supply is not readily available. The proposed hybrid PV/wind micro grid utilizes a boost converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique to extract maximum energy from the renewable energy sources. The MPPT technique is applied to both the PV and wind sources using the incremental conductance method. The proposed system is implemented using a modified cascaded multilevel inverter with nearest level control (NLC) technique for controlling the switches on and off. The NLC technique improves harmonic reduction in the system. The harmonic minimization is carried out by designing and modeling a micro grid of a hybrid model with PV and wind renewable energy sources and battery for integration.
