Utilization of Filter Backwash Water from Caster Cooling Water System for Industrial Water Recycling Applications
Abstract
Industrial water usage, especially in steel manufacturing, has raised significant concerns over sustainability and resource optimization. In continuous casting operations, the caster cooling water system relies on filtration units that periodically generate large volumes of backwash water, typically discarded as waste. This study explores the potential for reclaiming and reusing this backwash water through a structured treatment process involving sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The objective is to reduce freshwater consumption, minimize effluent discharge, and promote sustainable water management practices. Laboratory analysis revealed that treated backwash water meets industrial reuse standards for non-critical applications such as secondary cooling, floor cleaning, and dust suppression. The findings demonstrate a practical, cost-effective solution for water recycling within industrial settings, aligning with zero liquid discharge (ZLD) goals and environmental compliance requirements.
