Abstract

Urbanization has been happening at a very high rate and therefore the cities have witnessed a great pressure to come up with efficient, resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Conventional methods of urban planning usually have difficulty coping with complicated spatial associations, dynamic population increase and environmental limitations. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) have turned into the potent means of intelligent urban planning because these technologies allow gathering, merging, analyzing and visualizing various geospatial data of different sources. This paper will discuss the application of GIS and remote sensing activities in facilitating smart urban planning projects, especially in development of infrastructure. It looks at the use of satellite imagery, the spatial database and geospatial analytics in an effort to enhance land-use planning, transportation networks, utility management, and environmental monitoring. An elaborate geospatial data integration and analysis methodology is offered with central processing steps and decision-support mechanisms. Findings indicate that planning based on GIS and RS is very effective to improve the accuracy of the decisions, resource management, and sustainability of the urban environment in the long term. Nonetheless, some practical problems including the high cost of data acquisition, technical expertise, problems of interoperability of data and governance constraints are still an impediment to adoption. The paper will end with research directions in the future AI-based geospatial analytics, real-time observation of the urban setting with the aid of IoT implementation, and participatory GIS models of the inclusive smart city development.
