DIGITAL DUSTBIN FOR WET AND DRY WASTE SEGREGATION
Abstract
The rapid rise of urbanization and population increase are posing serious challenges to the waste management sector. Due to irregular collection and monitoring, traditional dustbins overflow and cause unhygienic environmental conditions that result in disease spreading. Further, segregation of waste for the purpose of recycling is still primarily a manual affair, making it an inefficient and labour-intensive task. This paper describes the Digital Dustbin, which automatically segregates wet and dry waste at the source itself. It incorporates IR sensors for waste detection, a moisture sensor for segregation, servo motors for mechanical sorting, and ultrasonic sensors for bin-level monitoring. A GSM/IoT module sends an alert to the authorities when the bin gets almost filled. This work proposes a layout for an efficient and low-cost eco-friendly smart waste management system for urban as well as rural areas.
