Abstract

The growing demand of the effective transmission systems of energy has caused a lot of research to be conducted in nanomaterial-based conductors due to their superior electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. This article is an experimental study where the characteristics of nanomaterials conductors, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene and silver nanowires are compared to conventional conductive materials. Electrical conductivity, energy loss, thermal stability and scalability were taken as important parameters and studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The findings show that the nanomaterials have much less resistive losses, and much higher current carrying capacity, which can be good candidates of the next generation energy system. However, it also has practical limitations which are critical to commercialization such as that the material is expensive to produce, the material is not stable in mass integration and fabrication problems. The study should be conducted in future to focus on the cost-effective synthesis processes, development of hybrid materials and the implementation strategies on large scale to bridge the gap between the laboratory performance and the working in the real life.
